
John Dalton serves as the executive director of our Coalition. In addition, he is editor of The Three Minute Read™ and co-author of our second book, Healing American Healthcare: Lessons from the Pandemic. John has had an extensive career in healthcare operations and finance. As a partner at Deloitte John led the project to design New Jersey’s first hospital cost reporting and rate setting system and the conceptual design of the DRG payment system that evolved into Medicare’s IPPS. John directed a project to reorganize the finance function at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and served on a U.S. team evaluating the health care delivery system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Active in the 40,000-member Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), John has held leadership roles in both the national organization and its New Jersey chapter. John served on the National Board of Directors (1994-96) and was selected by HFMA as the 2001 recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award. As a member of the 2008 HFMA delegation to Russia, he lectured on “US Health Quality Indicators” at the National Research Institute of Public Health in Moscow. He also has lectured on “Healthcare in the Russian Federation” to HFMA chapters in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania. John has served on the Board of Trustees of Children’s Specialized Hospital, Mountainside, NJ since 1986, including a three-year term as Chairman, becoming an honorary trustee in 2005. He also served on the Board of St. Joseph’s Health, Paterson, NJ from 2003-16, including five years as Vice-Chairman and as chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. The New Jersey Hospital Association named him its 2017 Hospital Trustee of the Year. Mr. Dalton holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and received the 2013 Stevens Alumni Award. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a major in finance from the Stuart School of Management at Illinois Institute of Technology. In his leisure time, John enjoys grandkids, golf, travel, and running.
